When the kiss ass tries to break the rules

Updated: Apr 20, 2020

This week the top end Art Market slumped to a new low. Featuring a piece that gives validity to every time your dad says, "See I don't get it. How is that art?" I'm sure everyone is already familiar with the now infamous taped banana. A great marketing ploy for the Art Basel community to remind the world that they are relatable. We like to have fun.

For me this is just embarrassing. If you are gonna take art seriously, take it seriously. If you are like me and enjoy a good bucking of the system, then let's do that, but to do something so corny and thoughtless and immediately have the sale price go through is a real shame. This is a guy trying to be funny, who isn't funny. An industry to to be relatable when their product is selling for more than most peoples houses.

Don't think for one second that this work wasn't pre-approved by multiple curators and Basel Staff. The artist was so daring to do break the rules that he got permission and wall space. But what do you know, we all fawn over and make this lame ass piece go viral. I'm not sure how I feel about the rest of the artist catalogue, but from now on in my eyes they are the dude with his hand up, left waiting for someone to slap them five. But it never comes.

We are better than this. If you're an artists and you want to take a dig at something or buck the system. Then actually do it.
